Background
In 2005 Creative Partnerships Coventry embarked on the
Second Skin
project to develop stimulating learning environments for early years
children. Teachers and artists came together to create a multi
sensory 'LAB' from which ideas were brought into schools.
At the same time Alex Woolner was working on
Project Spectrum with Coventry University, a sensory classroom for children on the autistic spectrum, and
Closer!,
an interactive sensory environment. Both of these projects used digital
technology to develop original forms of engaging children.
In 2006 Creative Partnerships, Vikki Holroyd and Alex Woolner met up
to discuss a new project that would draw on their previous work
and develop it into a new interactive and sensory tool which would
empower young people through a creative relationship with technology.
Alex was introduced to the Reggio Emilia
approach, and through his observations and further discussion, he
designed the IMAGINATOR. This took the form of hardware, software and a
collaborative artistic approach that combined into a package that was
presentable to schools.
